City of Edina elections staff completes recount
Edina,
Minn., Nov. 14, 2008 – Edina City Clerk Debra Mangen and elections
staff on Nov. 13 finished a recount of the Edina City Council election. The
Edina City Council will act on a canvass of the City Council election
results 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18. Vote totals will not be official until
after the meeting.
According to results after the Nov. 4 election, in the race for two City
Council seats, incumbent Ann Swenson was the top voter-getter with 11,370
votes. Mary Brindle finished second with 8,545 votes. Josh Sprague finished
third with 8,415 votes. Other candidates in the election were John Lonsbury,
K.K. Thompson and Ted Volk.
Because
the difference between the second- and third-place vote totals was less than
one-half of one percent of the total votes cast, Sprague requested a recount,
which the law allows.
During
the recount, held in the Council Chambers of Edina City Hall, teams of
election judges and elections staff inspected each ballot. Though the City
Council election is nonpartisan, an equal number of Republican and Democrat
election judges participated in the recount. Each election judge signed an
oath prior to the Nov. 4 election, attesting to their ability to remain
objective during the process. Both Brindle and Sprague were present for the
recount.
During
the recount, Brindle lost three votes and Sprague gained three. Brindle’s
vote total was 8,542. Sprague received 8,418 votes.
Brindle
is expected to be sworn in as the newest member of the Edina City Council
Jan. 5.
