Bring Non-Perishable Food Items to Edina Liquor

Edina Liquor customers have the chance to give back to their community this fall during the first-ever Municipal Liquor Food Drive.

During the month of October, bring in five canned goods or dry food donations and receive a 10 percent discount on your current purchase. The discount will not be applied to product-of-the-month specials or close-out items. Non-perishable food items brought to Edina Liquor will be donated to Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People (VEAP), a local non-profit agency serving low-income, elderly and disabled persons in the communities of Bloomington, Edina, Richfield and South Minneapolis.

The Minnesota Municipal Beverage Association and Coors Brewing are coordinating the event with many of the State’s municipal liquor stores. The individual store, not city, that collects the most food over the course of the month will earn an additional $2,000 donation to it local food shelf of choice.

Edina Liquor has always been committed to giving back to the Community. Over $1 million is put back into the City’s coffers each year to support public amenities like Braemar Golf Course, Braemar Arena, Edina Art Center and many other parks and facilities. This is your chance to give back as well. Bring in your non-perishable food donations to any of our three Edina Liquor locations between Oct. 1 and Oct. 31.

Savor the Flavors of Microbrews

Caramel, orange, coffee, toffee, apricot, cinnamon and honey -- probably not the first tastes that come to mind when thinking of beer, but these tasty flavors describe a wide selection of Edina Liquor’s microbrews.

Microbrews, particularly the seasonal beers, do a good job of rounding out our summer and fall sipping selections. One is sure to discover plenty of flavors to savor. Below is a sampling of beers from two local breweries -- Surly Brewing Company in Brooklyn Park and Summit Brewing Company in St. Paul, as well as a pumpkin-spiced beer for Halloween that is not scary at all!

Surly Furious: Sipping this brew is like tasting hops and oranges in the midst of a pine forest with the smell of flowers lingering in the air. Containing just a touch of spice, Furious is a malty-bodied India Pale Ale created by blending American hops and Scottish malt. Each pint, sold in packs of four, contains 6.2 percent alcohol. A four-pack is available for under $10.

Surly Cynic Ale: One Edina Liquor customer noted, “Microbrews are meant to be enjoyed in the summertime.” Cynic Ale certainly captures this sentiment by delivering refreshing tastes of apricot and honey. The lightest tasting Surly beer, this golden-hued brew uses French malted barley, English oats and Belgian yeast to keep it going down smooth.

Surly Bender: Oatmeal, sugar, coffee and toffee mix together to form this dark brown ale. A real value at $8.99 per four-pack, this ale is now available at Edina Liquor all year.

Summit Oktoberfest Marzen Style:  This caramel-based seasonal beer out of St. Paul is reddish-bronze in color and brewed in honor of the annual European celebration known as Oktoberfest. Each bottle contains 7.4 percent alcohol and is available in 12-packs.

Buffalo Bill’s Brewery Pumpkin Ale: Pumpkin and spice is really quite nice! This special California microbrew has flavors of cinnamon and hints of pumpkin pie in every bottle.

Tops with Tomko - Rare Fine Wines

2006 Natalie’s Estate Pines Vineyard Merlot: Only 182 cases of this big, rich Washington merlot were produced. Bold black fruit aromas lead into flavors of black cherry and plum with just a hint of spice. Hands down, this is the best merlot I’ve had in years! $29.99

2006 Chateau Ste. Michelle Eroica Riesling: With grapes from Chateau Ste. Michelle’s best Riesling plots handpicked by the world-renowned Dr. Loosen of Germany, this excellent wine has already established a lofty pedigree, having reached the Wine Spectators top 100 “Wines of the Year” every year but one since introduced. Mineral and slate tones frame primary flavors of lime and orange. $23.49

2006 Penner-Ash Willamette Valley Pinot Noir: Black cherry, cassis and black pepper aromas lead into a silky smooth palate of blackberry, cherry and violets. The finish lingers with vanilla notes. $49.99

2005 Montes Purple Angel Carmenere: Chile’s “wonder grape,” Carmenere, is given star billing in this offering from Montes. Aged 18 months in new French oak barrels, it shows deep, spicy red and black fruit flavors with a touch of vanilla on the finish. Any lover of great Bordeaux will be surprised by this stunning gem. $56.99

Shop Early for Specialty and Limited Beer and Liquor

As the green of summer fades away into the many shades of autumn, we know it’s time to gear up for the holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner! Specialty and limited-release items are always popular during the holiday season. Although we can’t carry them all, we do our best to carry items sought by our customers.

This time of year, Oktoberfest beers and pumpkin ales are in high demand. We are often able to get only five to 10 cases per store, so shop early for the best selection. Winter ales are also very popular when in season, so quantities may be limited. If you’re looking for a beer that is really unique, ask our staff for guidance as we frequently get items in that have not been previously available.

Liquor tends to be more apt to have a specialty or limited product than beer. Scotch is always at the top of our list of requests from customers looking for something special. Generally, any scotch that is aged 20 years or more will be very limited from now until the end of the year. Scotches we carry that fit this bill are Macallan 25-year ($499.99/750mL) and Glenmorangie Elegance 21-year ($339.99/750mL).

We also have the ultimate Congnac in Remy Martin Louis VIII ($1,399.99/750mL) and a limited-release Caribbean rum that is very hard to come by called Pyrat Rum Cask 1623 ($219.99/750ml).

If you like champagne, we have Roederer Cristal ($289.99/750mL), considered the premier champagne on the market. This item is very limited; we only get a few bottles every year.

Shop at Edina Liquor early and often for the best selection on specialty and limited products. If there is an item that you want that we don’t carry, ask us and we will try to get it for you!
